GENTRY, AR -- The fall sports season is off to a strong start for Gentry Public Schools, with Pioneer athletes finding early success across the athletic program and preparing for conference and state championship competition later this fall.
From the football field to the golf course, volleyball court and cross country trails, Gentry teams are continuing to improve as the season moves into its most important stretch.
Cross Country
After two meets, the Gentry Pioneer Cross Country teams are focused on improving their times and building toward the postseason.
The Pioneers will have several opportunities to compete against strong competition before the conference championships in late October. The team will also set its sights on the state meet, scheduled for Nov. 6 in Hot Springs.
Upcoming cross country events include the Little Johns Invitational in Danville on Sept. 15, the Panther XC Classic in Siloam Springs on Sept. 26 and the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville Oct. 2-3.
With several weeks remaining before the postseason, coaches and athletes will use each meet to continue developing, lowering times and preparing for championship competition.
Volleyball
The Lady Pioneers have also gotten off to a promising start, winning three of their first four matches of the season.
Now, the focus shifts to conference play.
Gentry opens its conference schedule at home Thursday against Green Forest. With conference competition underway, the Lady Pioneers will look to carry the momentum from their strong start into the heart of the season.
Football
The Pioneer football team has made an impressive statement to open the season, beginning the year 2-0 with victories over Paris and Jay, Oklahoma.
Perhaps most impressive has been the performance of the Gentry defense. Through the first two games, the Pioneers have yet to allow a point.
Gentry will look to continue its unbeaten start Friday night when the Pioneers host Clarksville. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Golf
The Pioneer golf teams have also enjoyed early-season success while preparing for conference and state tournament competition later this fall.
Most recently, Gentry competed Thursday in a nine-hole match at Bella Vista Scotsdale.
The Lady Pioneers-- Olivia Nations, Callie Jordan, Jamee Kirk and Giavonna Williams -- won the four-team match with a team score of 163.
Nations led the way individually, finishing first overall with a score of 47 to earn medalist honors.
The Gentry boys continued their steady improvement, posting their best nine-hole team score of the season with a 129. Eagan Harper led the Pioneers with a score of 40, followed closely by Zach Hill, who carded a 41.
The Pioneers return to the course Tuesday, Sept. 8, when Gentry hosts a six-team, 18-hole match at The Creeks.
Building Toward the Postseason
While the Pioneers have already experienced plenty of success this fall, the biggest opportunities are still ahead.
With conference and state championships approaching in the coming weeks, Gentry athletes will continue using each competition as an opportunity to improve, compete and prepare for the postseason.
