GENTRY, AR -- The Gentry High School Pioneer Football team is putting in the work this summer as players and coaches prepare for the upcoming 2026 season, but they’re making sure safety remains the top priority along the way.
The team was recently featured by KNWA-TV for the precautions being taken during summer practices as Northwest Arkansas continues to experience periods of excessive heat.
With high temperatures creating additional challenges for athletes, the Pioneer coaching staff has implemented several safety measures, including adjusting practice times, emphasizing hydration, and encouraging players to communicate how they are feeling throughout each workout. An athletic trainer is at the practices as well, monitoring player behaviors while also keeping an eye on weather conditions with a "wet bulb" and other technology. A "cold bath" is also prepared and at the ready if needed in an emergency, but with the precautions in place they hope it never gets that far.
“We pride ourselves on not making excuses and obviously being aware of our body and how we feel and being honest about that,” said Gentry High School Head Football Coach Tyler Clark. “At the same time, yeah, it’s hot outside, and it can be tough to practice in that. Everybody else is doing it too. Just taking care of your body and practicing as hard as you can — our kids have done well with it.”
While player safety comes first, the summer months also provide an important opportunity for athletes to build the foundation needed for a successful season. The discipline, preparation, and commitment shown during these practices help teams develop the habits that will carry over when the season begins.
Coach Clark noted that the current weather conditions in Northwest Arkansas are similar to what the Pioneers may experience during the early part of the season, making these practices valuable in helping players acclimate to the conditions they will face on game nights.
“The work we put in now prepares us for what’s ahead,” Clark said.
The Pioneers will officially begin the 2026 football season on Friday, Aug. 28, at Paris. Their first home game is the following Friday, Sept. 4, against Jay, Okla.
