GENTRY, AR — A routine school day turned into a memorable celebration at Gentry Intermediate School as fourth grade teacher Miss Gil was surprised with the school’s 2026 Teacher of the Year award during a special ceremony surrounded by her students.

The unexpected recognition brought together all fourth grade classes, creating a moment of excitement and appreciation for a teacher who has made a lasting impact both inside and outside the classroom.

Miss Gil, who has 12 years of teaching experience and is in her third year at Gentry, said the honor was especially meaningful.

“I’ve loved every minute of it here,” she said.

A graduate of Southwestern Adventist University, Miss Gil earned both her Bachelor of Science in Education and her Master of Education in Reading and Curriculum Instruction. Colleagues say she brings a high level of energy, creativity, and passion to her classroom each day.

But Gentry Intermediate School Principal Kristen Smartt emphasize that her influence goes well beyond academics.

Known for building strong relationships with students, Miss Gil is a familiar face at local youth events, often attending games and activities to support her students outside of school. She also stays active in her personal time and values opportunities to connect with family and friends.

In fact, she credits her students with sparking a new interest in baseball after arriving in Gentry three years ago, just one example of the connections she builds with those she teaches.

Students say those connections are what set her apart.

“Miss Gil is awesome because she teaches us a lot of stuff, makes us feel better when we are down, and she does fun activities with us,” said student Westyn Nance. “She comes to all GYO games and supports us. She shows she cares by greeting us with a hug every morning and is nice and respectful to everyone.”

Another student, Finley Lynch, shared a similar sentiment.

“Thank you for being an awesome teacher. I’m so happy you got Teacher of the Year. This has been the best year ever with you and I don’t want it to end,” Lynch said. “Thank you for teaching me. You are the best teacher ever.”

District officials say Miss Gil exemplifies the qualities of an outstanding educator, combining strong instruction with genuine care for her students.

Her recognition as Gentry Intermediate School’s Teacher of the Year highlights not only her dedication to teaching, but also the meaningful relationships she builds with students each day, Smartt said.
