GENTRY, AR -- Gentry Public Schools honored the legacy of longtime educator, coach, and leader Sean Seligman on Monday evening by officially retiring his baseball jersey following a three-decade career serving students and athletes in Gentry.
Seligman, who died earlier this month after a short battle with leukemia, had spent his career as a teacher, coach, and mentor within the district, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students. In recognition of his contributions, the Gentry School Board voted last week to retire his jersey number, #40, ensuring it will forever be a part of Pioneer athletics history.
The retirement ceremony took place at Pioneer Baseball Field shortly after the senior high baseball game Monday. The field itself carries a personal connection to Seligman, who played a significant role in its development, not only by helping secure donations, but also by physically contributing to its construction.
Community members, students, alumni, and families gathered for the ceremony to celebrate his life, his dedication to student-athletes, and his long-standing commitment to the district. The jersey encased in a glass frame was presented to his wife and family who were in attendance.
Gentry Public Schools officials and a former player, Lance Nations, who now serves as the school's assistant softball coach, reflected on Seligman’s influence both on and off the field, noting the lasting mark he left on the district’s athletic program and school culture.
