Lunch

GENTRY, AR — Gentry Public Schools will provide lunch at no cost to all students beginning in the 2026–2027 school year following official approval of the district’s application for a state pilot program.

The approval comes after months of planning and financial review by district leadership, along with a formal application process that began earlier this spring. Initial qualification results were released April 1, and the program has now cleared the state’s final validation process.

District officials say the initiative will launch as a pilot year, with annual reviews to ensure long-term sustainability based on available funding and program support.

“This is a meaningful step forward for our students and families,” Gentry Superintendent Dr. Tyler Broyles said. “We’re proud to continue building on efforts that provide direct support where it matters most.”

Under the program:

  • All students will receive lunch at no cost to families

  • No meal applications or balances will be required

  • Students will continue to receive the same quality, variety, and nutritional standards currently in place

The move builds on a previously approved initiative that will also provide school supplies at no cost to all K–12 students next year, thanks in part to support from community sponsors.

Broyles emphasized the broader impact of the effort.

“Students have to come to school every day, and we believe access to that experience should be as seamless as possible for families,” Broyles said. “This reflects our commitment to using school resources responsibly in ways that have a direct, positive impact on students.”

He added that districts must remain proactive and intentional in how they serve students across all areas, including academics, safety, and student opportunities.

While breakfast is already provided at no charge to all Arkansas students under state law, the addition of free lunch further reduces financial pressure on families and eliminates concerns such as meal debt.

Broyles said the goal is simple: Create an environment where students can focus on learning while families feel supported.
