GENTRY, AR — Gentry High School has hired Hunter Southerland as its new senior high girls basketball coach, bringing a mix of playing accolades and coaching experience to the Lady Pioneer program.
Southerland joins Gentry after serving as an assistant coach at Searcy High School since 2022, where he helped guide the Lady Lions to a 23-8 overall record during his second season at the school. Prior to that, he was the head coach at Taylor High School, leading his team to a 20-8 record and postseason appearances, including strong conference finishes and regional tournament play.
“We are thrilled to announce Hunter Southerland as the new leader of our Lady Pioneer basketball program,” said Brent Hester, Gentry's athletics director. “He brings proven success as a coach, but just as importantly, a commitment to mentoring student-athletes and building a strong team culture.”
A standout player in his own right, Southerland earned Class 7A State Champion honors and was named Most Valuable Player during his high school career at Cabot. He was also recognized as an All-State selection, a two-time All-Conference honoree, and participated in the 2016 Arkansas High School All-Star Game.
“Hunter understands what it takes to compete at a high level,” Hester said. “He’s been there as a player and now as a coach, and that experience will be invaluable for our student-athletes.”
Southerland is a graduate of Southern Arkansas University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education with honors.
Beyond basketball, Southerland is known for his strong community involvement. He serves on his church praise team as a guitarist and is passionate about helping young athletes grow both on and off the court.
“His character and leadership stood out throughout the hiring process,” Hester added. “We believe he’s the right person to lead this program forward and make a positive impact in our school and community.”
