GENTRY, AR — After more than a decade without a quiz bowl program, the team at Gentry High School has made a remarkable return, earning a trip to the state tournament following a standout performance at regional competition this past weekend.

The Gentry Quiz Bowl team competed Saturday in Berryville at the 4A-2 Senior High Regional Tournament, finishing in second place with a 3–1 record. The strong showing secured the Pioneers a spot in the 4A State Quiz Bowl Tournament, which will be April 11 in Dardanelle.

The achievement is particularly notable given that this is the program’s first season competing at the senior high level in more than a decade. Programs that are revived after such a long absence often require several years to rebuild experience and depth, making Gentry’s immediate success especially impressive.

“This is quite an accomplishment since this is our first year competing at the senior high level in a long time,” said Daniel Tu, a math and computer science teacher at Gentry High School and the team’s coach. “I’m proud of the work our team has put in this year, and we’re excited for the opportunity to compete in the state tournament next month.”

One of the highlights of the day came from Gentry’s Ivan Chupp, who was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging seven tossups per game — an outstanding individual performance.

Quiz bowl is an academic competition that challenges students across a wide range of subjects, including literature, science, history, mathematics, and current events. Teams compete by answering rapid-fire “tossup” questions and can earn additional points through bonus rounds.

With their regional runner-up finish, the Pioneers will now prepare to compete against top teams from across the state when they travel to Dardanelle next month for the state tournament.
