Officials

GENTRY, AR -- Gentry High School is adding a new and innovative elective next year that will give students the opportunity to see athletics from a completely different angle — as the official.

Beginning next school year, students in grades 9-12 will be able to enroll in Sports Officiating, a physical education credit course designed to introduce them to the fundamentals of officiating competitive sports.

“We are excited to offer Sports Officiating as a new PE credit option for our students,” said Dr. Tyler Broyles, superintendent of Gentry Public Schools. “This course gives students the chance to learn the ins and outs of officiating while building leadership skills and staying connected to athletics.”

The course is being offered in partnership with the Arkansas Activities Association and RefReps, organizations that support high school athletics and official development across the state. Through the program, students will receive hands-on instruction and practical experience designed to prepare them for real-world opportunities.

“There is currently a nationwide shortage of sports officials,” Broyles said. “This class allows our students to help fill that need while gaining valuable, transferable skills that can benefit them long after high school.”

In addition to learning rules and mechanics of various sports, students will develop communication skills, decision-making abilities, and confidence. all qualities essential for effective leadership both on and off the field.

The course will count as a physical education credit and will be available as an option for students during CAP Conferences on March 20.

“We’re proud to continue offering innovative opportunities that serve both our students and our community,” Broyles said. “We can’t wait to see Gentry students step up and experience the game from a whole new perspective.”

With the addition of Sports Officiating, Gentry High School continues its commitment to expanding career-connected learning experiences while addressing real-world workforce needs.
