GENTRY, AR — A simple act of kindness is making a powerful impact thanks to the dedication of Dee Vaughn, a fifth-grade teacher at Gentry Intermediate School. Known for her passion for helping children, Vaughn has extended her care beyond the classroom by leading an ongoing aluminum can tab collection to support the Toby Keith Foundation.
The Toby Keith Foundation is committed to supporting children battling cancer and their families by providing hope, comfort, and essential resources during challenging times. One of the Foundation’s signature programs, OK Kids Korral, serves as Oklahoma’s only pediatric, cancer-specific “home away from home,” offering families a safe, welcoming place to stay at no cost while their child receives treatment.
Recently, the Foundation recognized Vaughn’s efforts with a special letter of appreciation, noting that donations like hers play a critical role in making cost-free housing and support possible for families when they need it most.
A donation jar placed outside Vaughn’s classroom allows students, teachers, and staff to contribute aluminum can tabs throughout the year. Those small tabs are recycled to generate real financial support for the Foundation, while also teaching students an important lesson about generosity and community involvement.
“This is something nearly everyone can help with,” Vaughn said. “Many families already use aluminum cans. Saving the tabs is an easy way to support a great cause, teach kids about giving back, and even have some fun doing it.”
Families are encouraged to collect aluminum can tabs and send them back to school with students. Donations are welcome year-round.
Gentry Intermediate School is proud of Mrs. Vaughn and its students for demonstrating how small actions can create meaningful change and for showing what it truly means to care for others.
