GENTRY, AR -- The Gentry High School boys wrestling team is entering the new season with high expectations and renewed momentum, returning four athletes who qualified for state championship matches last year and welcoming an experienced transfer who also competed at the state level. With five proven competitors and a growing roster of dedicated wrestlers, the Pioneers are optimistic about their chances for a historic season.

Returning to the mat are senior Aidan Eller, juniors Atreyu Banks and Tate Simmons, and sophomore Jaxon Burkhalter — all state qualifiers in 2024. Joining them is junior Jackson Graves, a transfer from Shiloh Christian who wrestled in last year’s state championships and is now part of the Pioneer family. Their experience forms the core of a strong and motivated team.

The program’s growth is also supported by an expanded coaching staff. This year, Coach Salvador Castro is joined by Coach Robert Watson, increasing the coaching resources available to athletes and strengthening leadership across the team.

“We have high hopes for our team this year – and our athletes are bringing their own high expectations as well through their hard work,” Castro said. Since launching the program with only two wrestlers in 2023, Castro has overseen rapid growth to 15 athletes and counting.

Castro praised the leadership of team captains Banks and Simmons, noting their influence both on and off the mat.
“Our practices have been strong,” he said. “I use Atreyu and Tate as examples – they lead by example and provide the leadership we need as a team.”

In addition to Eller, Banks, Simmons, Burkhalter and Graves, this year’s roster includes senior Landon Burks, junior Ben Martin, freshman Aaron Ellis, junior Derek Martinez, sophomore Jakob Duerr, senior Jimmy Hughes, sophomore Tristain Hoelscher, sophomore Levi Alas, junior Hayden Castor, and junior Jose Ruiz.

Gentry fans will have several opportunities to support the team at home:

  • Jan. 8 vs. Shiloh Christian (9 a.m.)

  • Jan. 13 vs. Huntsville and Gravette (tri-meet at 6 p.m.)

The postseason begins with Regionals on Feb. 7 at Perryville High School, followed by the State Tournament Feb. 13–14 at the University of Arkansas–Little Rock.

With experience, leadership, and depth, the Pioneers look poised for a breakthrough year on the wrestling mat.
