Kindergarten

Gentry, AR — Under the direction of their music teacher, Jason Burns, more than 100 kindergarteners gathered on stage to share songs, smiles, and receive accolades for completing their kindergarten year during a graduation ceremony on Friday. One of their songs, “On My Way,” told the story of their year’s journey:

“My brain is a little bit stronger, my hair is a little bit longer, my teacher’s a little bit prouder, my heart beats a little bit louder.”

It ended with the joyful declaration: “Watch me be the best that I can be!”

Parents and caregivers in the audience responded with enthusiastic cheers, paparazzi-style photography, and more than a few emotional sobs.

“This day is filled with a lot of pride, celebration, and a few happy tears,” said Gentry Primary School Principal Devon Conrad before each student was presented with a certificate commemorating the end of their first school year. “To our students, we are so proud of you! You are moving on to your next big adventure—and many more adventures to come.”

Kindergarten is a pivotal year in a child’s development. Teachers noted that while students began the year uncertain and wide-eyed, they finished with confidence and a growing set of skills as they prepare to enter first grade. An article in Scholastic Magazine recently noted how kindergarten provides children with “an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and study skills,” along with building self-esteem that will support them as they grow.

Those skills were certainly on display Friday, as students proudly stood on stage and accepted applause and congratulations.

“This has been an exciting day and an amazing school year,” Assistant Principal Andrea Folger told the students and parents. “Let’s carry this pride and joy into the future, knowing the best is yet to come.”

An open house for returning students will be Aug. 7, with the first day of school set for Aug. 12. One of the graduates Friday turned to Mr. Burns on his way out of the auditorium and exclaimed, “See you in first grade, Mr. Burns!”

Gentry Primary School serves students in kindergarten through second grade, providing the foundational education essential for future academic success. Primary school is a critical time for young learners to develop basic skills in reading, writing, and math, as well as to build social and emotional development.
