Afternoon Spotlight
Let’s talk about afternoon spotlights. This week the career coaches will be hosting three afternoon spotlights. On Monday, March 25 Carroll Electric Linemen visited and talked to students interested in this career field.
Career coach Megan Sullins said, “Our speaker Monday afternoon was Carroll Electric and they provided three presenters in the Journeyman/Lineman field. I contacted the customer service department to see if they would be interested in partnering with Gentry High School and they directed me to Scott Kelley, the manager of West Line Services. We had 6 students attend (Laine Philpott (9), Vareck Edwards (9), Jared Dupuy (10), Aiden Blevins (10), Logan Balli (12), and Brooklynn Snyder (12)).”
Career coach Melissa Fullmer said, “We are trying something new for our students by offering afternoon spotlights. This is an opportunity for students to hear from speakers who work in a business or industry that they have an interest in and learn more about it. This is a new event that we are trying this semester and hoping it is successful and will incorporate it again next year. This isn’t a replacement for the career seminars, but until at least next school year we won’t be hosting any more career seminars. We are hoping that the afternoon spotlight to reach students who are truly interested in the professions we have coming to visit and it will keep the setting smaller and more personable. It also allows us to have the speakers in person at our school meet with our students as opposed to a Zoom meeting. We have our events of speakers listed outside our room with QR codes so students can sign up to attend.”
Senior Logan Balli said, “I was interested in going to the seminar because this is a career path that I have been interested in, and wanted to know what benefits that company had, and if they had an apprenticeship program or not. I am not quite sure right now if it is the career path for me or not, still looking.”
GHS students, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for new upcoming opportunities to listen to a speaker. Future career spotlights can be found outside the career center (room 107). If students have any questions about the afternoon spotlight, make sure to email the career coaches or go visit them in room 107.
