Celebrate and Honor Veterans this Thursday!
Veteran’s day is coming up this Thursday, November 11th. This is a day to respect and honor those who have served our country in the military.
The first Veteran’s Day was actually called Armistice Day. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed this holiday on November 11th, 1919.
President Wilson gave these words that day: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”
Many people know veterans, although you may not realize. Here at school, you may know Coach Graham. Coach Graham joined the Army in 1990 when he was twenty-three and served for four years.
He explained, “I served in the 58th Combat Engineer Company, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Desert Storm. My main job was putting in and destroying anti-tank mines.”
Desert Storm was an operation that was fought during the Gulf War against Iraq.
He also said, “I enjoy being recognized on Veteran’s Day; I usually get a lot of free stuff!”
Many students have family members that have served. One of these students is freshman Makena Womack.
She remarked, “I’m glad we have a specific day to honor our veterans. This holiday means a lot to me and probably a lot of others because I have a great-grandpa who was in the air force. He means a lot to me and I’m grateful for what he’s done for this country.”
Veteran’s Day is an important day for many. Don’t forget to respect our veterans, and give them thanks for serving our country.
