Grand Slam!
The Pioneer baseball team battled the Huntsville Eagles on Monday, April 4th at home. Freshman Ayden Smartt did his best to change the outcome, but Smartt couldn’t lead Gentry past Huntsville as they lost 2-0 in seven innings. Huntsville had no answer for Smartt, who kept runners off the base paths in his appearance. Smartt gave up just two hits, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out one during his two innings of work. The lead stayed with Huntsville after the fourth, when they scored two runs on a groundout.
“We couldn’t hit and that’s why we lost the game,” Smartt said.
On Tuesday, April 5, the Pioneers traveled to Greenland to play the Pirates. After six lead changes Gentry finally pulled out a 6-5 win.
The Pioneers took the lead in the eighth inning and held on for the victory. Gentry took the lead for good on an RBI single by junior Sean Pierce, bringing home senior Zac Adkins.
Senior Wyatt Clark was solid at the plate. Clark went 2-4, drove in one and scored two runs. He tripled in the first inning and singled in the seventh inning. Sophomore Myles McFerron worked out of seven tricky spots for the Pioneers. He pitched three innings and allowed no earned runs on one hit. McFerron faced his trickiest spot in the eighth inning while pitching.
The top of the first saw Gentry take an early lead, 2-0. The Pioneers offense woke up as Smartt singled before Clark tripled, scoring Smartt. Greenland quickly matched Gentry’s strong inning with a two-run inning of its own in the first. The Pirates scored on a passed ball and a groundout.
The Gentry Pioneers went against the Cedarville Pirates on Thursday, April 8th in Cedarville. Gentry jumped out to an early lead on Cedarville and captured a 12-1 victory. Taylor hit a grand slam in the second in the second inning. Taylor racked up four RBIs in two hits.
Clark baffled Cedarville, striking out six batters. Clark allowed no earned runs on three hits and three walks over five innings.
Gentry easily handled Cedarville pitching as six hitters combined for 15 hits, 11 RBIs and 10 runs scored.
“Shout out to Wyatt for taking it in the leg and making it to base for me to hit a grand slam,” Taylor said.
Gentry took on Providence Academy on Friday, April 8th at Rogers. The Gentry Pioneers fell 12-8 to Providence Academy in seven innings. Cochran boosted his batting average thanks to a perfect 2-2 day at plate. He tripled in the second inning and singled in the third inning.
The top of the second saw Gentry take an early lead, 1-0. Gentry rallied when Cochran tripled. A stolen base then moved McFerron from first to second.
Providence Academy answered the Pioneers’ top inning with four runs of its own in the second inning.
Providence Academy never trailed after scoring four runs in the sixth on a fielder’s choice, two singles, and an RBI triple.
When asked about the loss against Providence Academy, Clark responded, “There’s no crying in baseball. We will do better next time.”
The Pioneers have a full week of baseball this week.
