Goal After Goal
The Gentry Pioneers played their second conference game against the Bergman Panthers Monday, March 27th. The Pioneers came out with a bang and were able to score in the first minute from junior left wing Clay Wills. After that goal, the Pioneers kept attacking the goal and taking all the shots they wanted to.
The Panthers only had 11 players and no subs on the team, and one of the Panther defenders had an injury, so they were playing with only 10 players. To show good sportsmanship, the Pioneers also played with 10 players to make it even. The next goal was made by forward sophomore Kevin Ochoa from about 5 yards out. Another goal, that went under the Panther goalie’s leg, was made by Ochoa. The next goal was made by Wills again from about 7 yards out. Ochoa had a hat trick (3 goals in one game) with a corner kick that curved right in.That put Ochoa with 4 goals this conference season already. The score was 5-0 with 25 minutes of the first half. Senior center middle Jared Rabb decided to join the fun and had a nice 10-yard power-shot that went in.The last goal of the first half was scored by junior forward Jentre Pair from about 9 yards out.
Heading into halftime the Pioneers were up 7-0 against the Panthers. The Pioneers came out the first half setting a tone and playing their game. Their communication and ball movement was the best ever!
The Pioneers were confident going into the second half. The second half was only 20 minutes because of the mercy rule (up 6 goals before halftime). The start of the second half the Pioneers were eager to score another. Freshman defensive middle Nick Linch did just that with just 4 minutes into the second half with a 20-yard shot from the side. Another goal was made by senior center middle Austin Fowler about 11 yards out that hit the crossbar and bounced in. The Pioneers were able to have the possession most of the second half, giving the Pioneers the win. The Pioneers won 9-0 and are now 1-1 in conference.
“This game is just what we needed after Dardanelle. I feel this was a confidence booster in all of us. We cleaned up a lot of the mistakes and were able to have a great outcome. I hope we can bring this type of intensity against Subiaco this Friday, April 1st,” said Ochoa after the big win.
The Pioneers next conference game is against the Subiaco Trojans this Friday, April 1st
