The Pioneers played the Greenland Pirates on Friday, March 11, at home. Three pitchers joined forces to throw a no-hitter for Gentry Pioneer Varsity in a 15-0 victory in five innings over Greenland. Sophomore Myles McFerron, senior Tanner Shipp, and senior CJ Taylor rounded out their sterling stat line with 10 strikeouts and two walks.
Taylor looked good on the mound. Taylor held Greenland hitless over three innings, allowed no earned runs, walked two and struck out seven.
Nine runs in the opening three innings allowed the Pioneers to easily put away Greenland. A two-run double by Shipp in the first inning helped the Pioneers put some runs on the board early.
Senior Wyatt Clark led the offensive threat, as he got on base three times in the game. He scored two runs and had one RBI. He singled in the second inning.
The Pioneers tacked on another seven runs in the third. A wild pitch scored Junior Carlos Alvarez to start the scoring in the inning. That was followed up by senior Dillon Matthews’s single scoring senior Zac Adkins and junior Sean Pierce.
Gentry piled on six more runs in the the fourth. A clutch hit scored freshman Dylan Rayburn to open the scoring in the frame.
“We came out firing on all cylinders. We took the lead and never looked back. We hit the ball well and played great defense to back it up. I look forward to see what this team can do,” Alvarez said.
The Gentry Pioneers outlasted Oaks-Mission on Saturday after six lead changes, squeaking out a 8-7 win at home. The Pioneers pulled out the win thanks to a strong eighth inning. An error scored Alvarez and gave the Pioneers the lead for good.
Clark racked up three RBIs on three hits for Gentry. He singled in the first and fourth innings and doubled in the fifth inning.
Oak-Mission jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. After a quick strike from Oaks-Mission, Gentry responded with two runs in the third. The Pioneers scored on a two-run double by McFerron.
Oaks got one-run boosts in each of the fourth, sixth, and eighth. In the fourth Oaks-Mission scored on an RBI triple bringing someone home.
It didn’t take long for Gentry to respond as it scored two runs of its own in the fourth, and scored an RBI (run batted in) single by Clark and a fielder’s choice. In the fifth inning the Pioneers scored on a two-run double by Clark, scoring Matthews and Rayburn.
“We were down a majority of the game, but we pulled it together towards the end and got a win,” freshman Ayden Smartt said.
