Tigers Scratch up Pioneers
The Gentry Pioneer soccer team played against the Bentonville Tigers last Friday, March 4. Every second was tough for the Pioneers. It was a game of yellow cards. It started off about 2 minutes into the game when junior center mid Aaron Walker received a yellow card because he forgot to take off his watch. Freshman right wing Nick Linch also received a yellow card midway through the second half for a slide tackle. One of the Tiger players was also carded for talking back to the referee.
Overall, the Tigers had possession of the ball most of the game. The Pioneers were only able to get a few breakthroughs in the first half and get only 2-3 shots off. The rest of the first half, the defense was just trying to kick the ball away.
Heading into halftime the Tigers were up 3-0 on the Pioneers. The Pioneers made some minor mistakes on the two corner kicks that were made by the Tigers. The Pioneers were frustrated, but knew they had to keep trying. The second half did not go the Pioneer’s way. The Tigers were able to score another goal about 5 minutes into the second half. The Pioneers had a couple of breakthroughs again like first half.
“We just need to learn from a good team like this and fix our mistakes before conference comes our way. Other than that, we did great better this year than we did last year against the Tigers. I feel like we are a team to beat when conference comes around,” said junior goalie Braxton Gunneman.
This game had the Pioneers losing 5-0 to the Tigers. The last time they played against the Tigers the score was 7-1.
