Pioneers Start Their Season 2-1
The Pioneer baseball team faced the Gravette Lions on Thursday, March 3rd at home.
Senior Josh Cochran went 2-2, sparking the team to a 9-4 victory in seven innings. He singled in the second and third innings.
Gravette took an early lead at the top of the first, 2-0 after two of the Lions doubled; however, the Gentry Pioneers came back and stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the third, scoring six runs on three singles.
The Pioneers tacked on another two runs in the fourth. Senior Tanner Ship singled, scoring senior Wyatt Clark to kick things off. Finally, sophomore Myles McFerron induced an inning-ending strike from Gravette’s Luke Summerford.
“I feel like the first two games have set a bar of how we should play all year long. We expect more wins to come,” senior Zac Adkins said.
The Pioneers went up against Elkins the next day Friday, March 4th, at home. McFerron gave no hits, but still fell short 9-4 in seven innings. McFerron held Elkins hitless over three innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out four.
“This was Elkins’ first game of the season, so they were using their first and second string pitchers. And this is our 3rd game this week, so we were using our third and fourth string pitchers,” Coach Ledbetter said.
The Pioneers were supposed to face the Oak Warriors on Tuesday, March 8th but the game was postponed because of the weather. According to Coach Ledbetter, the team will try to squeeze in games this Thursday and Saturday.
