Defending Soccer State Champions Are Excited To Start Season
On February 29, 2016, the Gentry High School varsity and junior varsity soccer teams will kick off their season at Heritage High School. The JV girls will kick off at 4:00, following with the JV boys. Then the varsity girls will begin at 5:30, and the varsity boys will follow at 7:00.
The defending girls’ soccer state champions have been preparing for this game since the beginning of the school year. They practice almost every day during eighth hour, and they have competed in games at the Next Level Arena in Springdale, AR over the past few months.
Haley Borgeteien-James, Erika Magana, Brieann Ward, Abigail Wilmoth, Dalilah Sanchez, and Brittney Atwood are all returning seniors. Senior Ana Linch, who recently transferred to Gentry High School from Mena, has joined the soccer team as well.
Senior Erika Magana admitted, “After looking at how many seniors we were going to need to replace this coming season, I was a little worried. However, we have been working really hard during the off season in order to achieve a state title again this year. I’m very excited to see how this season is going to kick off.”
Her teammate, Brittney Atwood (senior), is feeling rather confident about the upcoming games. She explained that, “We have had some ups and downs throughout practices, but we are all on the same page when it comes to game day and the outcome. We are going to come out with positive attitudes and take what we can from the learning experience.”
Overall, the team has high hopes for the upcoming season and are looking forward to Monday.
