It’s Hard To Be Humble When You Can Jump, Stunt, and Tumble
It’s that time of year again…the Gentry Senior High Cheer tryouts are just around the corner. There hasn’t been a set date yet, but they will for sure be in March, and hopefully before spring break. Now is the time for those who are trying out to start working on jumps, motions, and tumbling. Tumbling has become a big part of cheer and competition; therefore, tumbling is a huge part of cheerleading and is implemented weekly in practices.
Senior Lexie Clark said, “I’m really excited for tryouts. There is a lot of talent in this group and with their hard work and passion for the sport, they could go far.”
Gentry has always been an all-girl squad until last year when the team had 4 guys join. Because of this, they competed for the first time in the co-ed division. One of the guys, Dustin Stoufflet, ended up going on to the college level and cheering. Current cheerleaders are open to the idea of having guys who are serious about cheer try out this year. If anyone has any questions or concerns, please contact Miss Wilson, cheer coach. These tryouts will be available to all girls and boys who are currently in 8th-11th grade.
Coach Joni Wilson said, “I’m really excited about next year. We have 13 returners coming back and some outstanding kids have shown interest in trying out. Not only is there a lot of talent but it’s just a great group of kids.”
Tryouts will be the same as tryouts in years past. The girls will come in to three practices, normally Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday the week of tryouts, to learn a cheer, chant, and dance. On the Friday of tryouts, the girls will perform the cheer, chant, dance, and their best jumps and tumbling passes. Normally, the squad will be posted the afternoon of the Friday tryouts. So start working hard and good luck to everyone trying out for the Gentry Senior High Cheer Squad!
