The End Game
On February 8, the junior high Lady Pioneers played their final game against the Lincoln Wolves. The girls fought hard during their last game but came up short. The leading scorers were Meledy Owens (8) and Madison Ward (9). Unfortunately, the Lady Pioneers lost to the Lady Wolves by 20 points, 50-30.
Madison Ward said, “I’ll be honest, at first no one got along. We did not work as a team but as the season went on, it all came together and worked out. I’m glad we’re all close and get along.”
For this season the Lady Pioneers learned to be a team and this season was considered a “rebuilding” season. Coach Ward said, “As a whole, I think there were noticeable improvements made this season. Obviously, the season didn’t turn out the way we expected, but we grew closer as a team and found things we can build on for next season.”
I definitely think that we improved. We’ve worked hard in practice and it’s starting to show,” Kinley Hayes (8) said.
Mandy Barber (9) said, “Yes, I think we improved this year. We improved as a team and individuals. At the beginning of the year, we had a bunch of drama between each other. Then, towards the end, we put it past us and started working with each other.”
They also believe that this experience will help them improve for next year.
“I think that we will do very well next year. We as 8th graders will have to step up and be examples and help the younger girls. We’ll also get a good post and point guard,” Kinley Hays (8) said.
We gained a ton of experience this year and played a lot of tough teams, so I think we’ll see some rewards of that next season. Our future 8th graders will bring some talent and depth as well, so the future of Lady Pioneers basketball is very bright, and we’ll be a tough team to beat next year!” Coach Ward said.
The girls had a rough year but they prevailed as a team. The season may have ended for them but they will always be Lady Pioneers!
